TNA Bound For Glory 2016 PPV Review: Quick Thoughts

10/3/2016

Written by Jacob Stachowiak

I thought Bound For Glory was great this year. It certainly was the best BFG in awhile.

Check out my thoughts below:
Picture
Cody Stardust in his prime.
Lashley winning was the smart business move. It would have been a solid feel-good moment for EC3 to win, but, for the sake of how creative Lashley's run has been, it was the right decision.

Gail Kim destroying Maria was very satisfying even if Kim doesn't need the belt (who cares though because Maria sucks).
Kim's speech was great with her husband, HOT MESS Taryn Terrell, Awesome Kong, and SINGER OF HOT MESS Christy Hemme there. I really loved Kim listing off people who helped her, especially her focus on Molly Holly (who got a big pop upon her mention, GOAT Molly Holly).

Mike Bennett and Maria both losing and getting beaten up was great because I can't stand how much screen time that couple has gotten these past few months. Moose got a nice rub out of it and will challenge Lashley in the future, most likely.

Cody Rhodes' debut was cool. I love the entrance music and his jacket. I have a feeling Brandi will be terrible in the ring, but they are a packaged deal and it's kind of cool to see a babyface power couple to combat the Kanellis's.

Aron Rex vs. Eddie Edwards was really good, despite Sandow's hog body he had going on. I would've been fine with either guy, but the match was quality and went down to a judge decision that was entertaining.

The graphics and lighting were an issue all night, but the TNA editing/production crew deserves a round of applause for their handling of The Great War. Handling pre-taped vignettes and live action at once is difficult for even WWE, but they managed and I was very impressed.

The Hardys winning the belts brings the angle to full circle (Matt becoming broken because of Jeff's reckless behavior that cost them the belts). I'm interested to see where it goes as the whole stable is babyface despite Jeff basically being subservient.

On the opposite end, Decay were great foils to the antics of the Cameron Clan. However, with the feud nearing its conclusion, will the Death Dealers stay relevant? I'm not sure, but, thankfully, TNA President Billy Corgan is a huge supporter for their gimmick.

E-LI DRAKE was a solid choice to win the Bound For Glory match. I was hoping Jessie Godderz would begin his ascension to the main-event hierarchy, but Drake was a good substitute. I wanted more out of Braxton Sutter and Rockstar Spud's interactions, but they were good and hopefully we'll see more from them.

My match of the night, despite the intensity of the main-event and the chaos of The Great War, was the opening X-Division Championship match. Zema Ion continues to reinvent himself with his great entrance, persona, and in-ring work. DJ Z and Trevor Edwards had great spots and close finishes reminiscent of classic X-Division bouts.

Overall, it was definitely worth the time, and the booking was sound with quality matches in-between.
